The ubiquitous Voix Céleste is typically a single rank of pipes yielding a mild string tone, found in Swell divisions and intended for use with a Salicional or Viola da Gamba. The name was coined in France in the 1840's; a few writers inappropriately use it as a generic term for all celestes.

Examples

Osiris contains about five hundred examples of Voix Celeste, about six dozen examples of Vox Coelestis, four dozen of Vox Celeste, three dozen of Voz Celeste, and seven of Vox Celestis. No examples are known of Voix Lumineuse, a name mentioned only by Wedgwood. are known. Contributions welcome.
